Before I tell you more about the Family Salon & Spa, with your permission, I would like to tell you a little bit about myself and my journey. It has been a great journey for me as an entrepreneur, which has culminated in reaching a milestone.
Like Napoleon Hill who said “If you cannot do great things, do small things in a great way,” when I was young, around 10-years, I used to hunt down my relatives, friends and neighbours to make them guinea pigs for my trials in make-up. Many responded, but there were a few who ran as soon as they saw me! What started as hobby, turned into something that I became very good at. After a few years, the scenario changed from people running away from me to seeking me out for their make-up for weddings, parties and functions.
Then it was time for studies and being from an orthodox family, I could not take this up as studies and career. My parents’ first thought was my marriage. God works in his ways, and it looked like he had a plan for me. He sent my “knight-in-the-shining-armour” as Flt Lt Vijay Kumar Verma, a young officer in the Indian Air Force. After marriage, my husband told me, “If you are good at something, then why sit at home?”
With this encouragement, began my journey through Tambaram (Chennai) > Hyderabad > Nalya (near Bhuj) > Chandigarh and then to Mysore. In all these places, I operated Beauty Parlour within Air Force Campuses for highly demanding customers, and found that they were happy, satisfied and most came back. This gave me great confidence, and for the first time I started a parlour for civilian population in Mysore. There were always ups and downs in business, but my family stood by me. Like Henry Ford who said, “there is no elevator to success. You have to take the stairs.”
In Mysore, when I started my first Beauty Parlour in D. Devraj Urs Road, I grew my business by 230 % in the first year. This was amazing. I could not believe it. But I understood that the years of excellence mindset and quality service that I gave started to yield good results. I also felt that good things happen to those who put in sincere efforts. From then onwards, due to great services we provided, our customers encouraged us and we grew to have three parlours within four years.
With excellence mindset, we could not think of anything but the best that Mysore could get.
